The documentary film “A Dragon Flew Over” (40 minutes; Vlada Tomova, director) celebrates Martha Forsyth, an American ethnomusicologist whose fieldwork preserved Bulgarian diaphonic folk songs. The film features Tomova’s Yasna Voices, New York Bulgarian Women’s Choir, which continues this unique musical tradition.

The Story
From 1976 until her death in 2023, American ethnomusicologist Martha Forsyth sought out, recorded, and documented two-part women’s folk singing in remote Bulgarian villages. Her collection documents a unique oral tradition that was largely obliterated in the upheaval of the post-Soviet era. Forsyth donated recordings of more than 4,000 songs to the American Folklife Center at the U.S. Library of Congress.
Film director Vlada Tomova is a native Bulgarian. She moved to the United States to study jazz singing. When she discovered Forsyth’s collection, her musical path shifted. She embraced her own musical and cultural tradition. She and her choir, Yasna Voices, reinterpret and perform songs from Forsyth’s collection.
“A Dragon Flew Over” explores stories of personal connection across decades and continents. Songs passed from mother to daughter to granddaughter for generations. When Forsyth learned of this tradition as a young academic in the early 1960s, she was inspired to bridge linguistic, cultural, and political chasms in the years to come. She forged connections with village singers, who allowed her to preserve pieces of their traditions. Several decades later in America, Tomova met Forsyth, and was drawn closer to her own Bulgarian musical roots, and to finding ways to share their beauty through her choir and in this film.
The last generation of traditional village singers has passed away, and a researcher who honored their work has now followed them. But the old music lives on though the interpretations and performances of new generations of singers.
След повече от 40 години търпеливо записване на двугласни песни и из българските села, Марта предава над 4000 песни и историите им на съхранение в Библиотеката на Конгреса във Вашингтон.
Идеята за филма се ражда по време на пандемиято, като Влада и хора ѝ искат да запишат видео-концерт с песни от архива на Марта с цел да го популяризират.
